Well, When i heard it, I thought it is a some sort of African TV lol.
It is getting really popular among young people like teenagers, 20's.
Anyone(called 'BJ' who do live) can do live on their computers with their camcorders or phones. And they can earn money with starballoon(별풍선) like cheering system in Twitch, So there are people who do it as a job.
So for some top BJ of Afreeca, makes over 80,000$ per month or more, But they also make their lives as a video for Youtube, Money from commercial sponsor etc. So yeah, they make a lot of money once they get famous.
But it is really difficult to get famous, Many of current famous BJs have long time of days of anonymity just like in entertainment industry.
People mostly do chat with the viewers doing computer games, broadcasting other sports games, or having their own contents just like TV shows But mostly in individual level.
One of Korean trend from Afreeca TV is the Mukbang(먹방). All you would watch on Mukbang is just someone eating. Some one just eat foods so tasty like commercial, or Some eat so lot of foods for few hours. Some people don't understand why people watch it, But i guess people watching it feels some kind of vicarious satisfaction.
